So we’ve officially had our first epically hot weekend of summer and unfortunately it’s here to stay. Let’s be honest, the last thing I want to do when it’s 117 outside is put on a full face of makeup and chase my kid around the splash pad. I can just picture my foundation melting off…eww. When summer rolls around I like to streamline my beauty routine and use products that will hold up to the heat (and sweat!). Less products and less time! Win-win!
I’m sharing my 5 favorite summer swaps for your makeup bag and my 10 minute daily makeup routine that can stand up to that summer heat!
- Swap out your foundation for a BB cream or tinted moisturizer. Die-hard foundation users are probably reading this thinking I’m crazy, but I urge you to give it a shot! A few months ago I decided to get my first tube of BB cream and I was instantly smitten. In the Winter it was great as a base under my foundation, but as soon as it got hot I ditched my usual mineral foundation and stuck to just the BB cream. It adds coverage without being too heavy and there are a ton on the market right now. If you aren’t a foundation girl or you have dry skin, try a tinted moisturizer.
- Add a matte powder. This will help reduce shine and absorb some of the oils as the day goes on. Plus it is light and doesn’t feel like you are wearing a heavy powder on your face. Just remember to take it easy with these, if you put on too much it’ll look cakey.
- Try a cream blush. Ok so I was scared of these initially – I was worried I would look like a porcelain doll with rosey red cheeks. Trust me, you need to try it – it adds a bit of moisture to your skin giving you a nice healthy glow. A little goes a long way so dab it on lightly and apply more if needed.
- Finish with a highlighter. This summer I am skipping the bronzer for my every day look and going with a highlighter. I love the overall glow it gives you. Just dust a little on top of your cheeks, nose and forehead.
- Ditch the lipstick and try a lip stain or tinted lip balm. Lipstick can be too heavy for summer and sometimes lipgloss is just a little to sticky. I have been loving lip stains lately since I love how they last all day (and don’t rub off!). When I am going for a lighter, every day look I reach for a tinted lip balm to add a little color to my lips.
Need a little something extra?
When I’m getting ready for a night out I like to add an eye shadow primer to keep everything in place, then finish up with a spritz of setting spray to keep everything from sweating off

Try a fun bold colored eyeliner or bright colored mascara
Here’s my 10 minute summer makeup routine
I start with a thin coat of BB cream. Next up I quickly fill in my eyebrows (optional – but this is a must for me with light colored brows) and do a thin line of eyeliner across each lid. Dab a little cream blush onto my cheeks. Bush on a light coat of matte powder then dust some highlighting powder over my cheeks, nose and forehead. Add a coat of waterproof mascara and smooth some tinted lip balm over my lips.
There you have it! just a handful of products and 10 minutes (or less) and you’re ready to look great and have some summer fun!
