The holidays are over! Can you believe it?? We made it through (with minimal scratches I hope – curse those pine trees am I right?!)! I’m sure I can speak for the majority here when I say: the house is also in complete and utter chaos from all the holiday festivities, ugh.

Sometimes the clutter drives me completely bonkers. I can’t even think straight from just all the STUFF on counters, tables, the dresser, the floor, so on and so on. Anyone else with me on that? After a couple days of just letting the messes happen, I always go through a time of “Declutter Mode”. I find after the holidays to be the perfect time to do this since we all received some amazing gifts and now it’s time to make room for them! Bring on all the plastic totes and trash bags!

I may go a little crazy in my decluttering moments. I’m not gonna lie. I tend to throw out everything. I’d rather trash it all and start over BUT instead I breathe *inhale*, *exhale* and take out all the options, and go through it all. For instance, my girls have a TON of clothes. They just seem to accumulate so much really fast but then also grow out of it super fast. So annoying that they grow so dang quick! So this year, I’m dumping ALL of their clothes out onto the floor in their room – yes it seems counterproductive but stay with me – and folding them in the Kon Mari style! Now this style isn’t for everyone and definitely not sponsored or anything, but it works for me and my family.

My kids always like to be involved, and I hope they stay that way even as teenagers – fingers crossed – so they have learned how to fold the clothes and make sure their drawers stay neat.

Getting them to help and learn how to do organization skills now will definitely be beneficial for them as they enter teenage years and adulthood. Plus they like putting clothes that are too small for them into bags to donate. They learn a valuable lesson in gratitude and giving by doing this exercise with me. My girls always love to take the bags to the donation center with me and see where the clothes go to help others! It’s a fun new year tradition for us!

You know the room in your house that’s the “catch all” space? That room seems to always also get an annual face lift! Mine is my office/craft room. I tend to take everything out again and do a deep clean of it all and donate more than half of it to Goodwill or other crafters in need.

It really helped my creative space be less daunting by moving that cube bookcase into my daughters’ room! We were able to put their bedding into it and make their closet a little more organized and I was able to have a cleaner space plus get rid of some things I definitely didn’t need or use anymore.Organization 101: New Year, Fresh Start! | East Valley Moms Blog - Ali Mills

I love the new year. A time for beginnings and reflection. I absolutely LOVE organizing during January (vs Spring Cleaning) so that I feel like I’m starting the year off on a good foot!

What are your favorite spaces to organize in your home? Do you do any special reorganizing at the beginning of the year?
