What is it like to have two boys?

Recently, I was asked by a fellow mom who’s expecting her second boy in March, what it was like to have two boys. I chuckled and smiled at the question. I want to start this blog post by saying that I have two boys, no girls. In no way do I thing being a parent of either gender, boy or girl, is easy.

But, boys are all I know.

Are there any boys’ moms out there? They say that we should should have our own secret handshake. So true. Raising boys has been one of the best experiences of my life and one of the most challenging. I learn something new everyday. To give you some background about me, I come from a family of all girls, no boys. My first experience with boys came from me having my own children. So much on the job training!

Teaching someone how to pee standing up, doing hundreds of Lego sets, and understanding everything about baseball, are just some of the areas I’ve become an expert in.

Many people have asked me if, I “ever wanted a daughter” or if I ever “wished we had a girl.” The answer is no. My heart is full and I’m happy being a boys’ mom. The truth is, I would feel the exact same if I had two daughters or if I had a girl and a boy. Both of my pregnancies were tough and I’ve always been grateful just to be a mom.

So, my answer to my friend expecting her second baby boy was what I’ve learned this far: our only job as parents is to love and nurture our children and to teach them about love and kindness, regardless of their gender. Boys are no easier or harder than girls, they all require snuggles and to be taught respect for themselves and for other people.

Just beware of Legos left on the floor, in the dark, at night. Ouch!
