Agree or Disagree: During busy days, you laugh way too much!
When was the last time you put your “to do list” away and cleared your mind of a myriad of details and chose to rekindle the child in you?
Recently, we had multiple days of heavy rain; one of which lasted almost an hour. One day, after one of the longest rainstorms, a classroom teacher called my office.
“Come quick! There’s a roof leak! It made a large wet circle! It’s sagging in the middle of one of the ceiling tiles in the corner! PLEASE! Bring a large empty tote. The water’s dripping!”
I grabbed a large empty tote on a shelf and quickly took off to her classroom of 4 and 5-year-olds while creating my adult to-do list. Will the water leak impact more classrooms. Hopefully no leaks near electrical lights. Ceiling tiles are expensive. Send an email to the owner about the leak. Check all rooms for leaks.
Once there, immediately put the tote on the floor to catch drips. Suddenly, the teacher said, “Class, quiet please. Listen to the drips.” The whole class froze as they sat quietly on the rug, waiting. The rare moment of quiet was delicious. They sat motionless.
Drip! The entire class made the sound of “Sh-sh-sh-sh.” Drips started to drop a little faster. After each drip, the class, with every eye on the tote, remained hushed. That soon changed.
It was as if the entire class had practiced for this moment. Instantly, they stood up together and stood upon the rug like frozen sculptures.
Drip! Drop, drip, drop! Faster they came. Drip drop, drip drop, drip! DROP!
Giggles erupted and so did their bodies! Up and down giggling and squealing, “It’s raining! It’s raining! It’s raining in our classroom!”
Their zealousness was contagious and awakened my childlike nature. I wanted what they had created! Goodbye adult to do list, at least for a little while! I joined them, jumped up and down chanting right along with them.
I want that joy more often. Thanks, kids. I can create a life of more joy . . . if I choose it.
It’s been said, the average 4-year-old laughs 300 times a day. The average 40-year-old? Only four.
