Healthy Road Trip Snacks

0

Ready to hit the road for a family vacation or a quick day trip?  Save money and calories by planning ahead.  Skip the high priced gas station food and pack your own snacks.  If you don’t have a cooler then I suggest investing in one that fits your family needs and grab a few reusable ice packs.

When I am traveling, I find that I feel better when I can keep healthier food options around.  Grabbing processed foods and eating at restaurants is hard on our bodies because these foods tend to be high in calories, fat and sodium.  Below are some of my favorite go-to travel snacks for myself and my kids!

Fruit – Use zip-lock bags or small containers for easy-to-grab individual size servings of grapes, blueberries, cubed watermelon, strawberries…any of your favorite fruits!

Peanut Butter – This one is our family favorite.  My kids love peanut butter with pretzel sticks.  I put the peanut butter in small containers so each kid has their own for dipping.  Other ideas for dipping: celery sticks, whole-grain crackers and apple slices.

Popcorn – Make your own at home and sprinkle with a little cinnamon for a tasty treat.  Again, I like to divide portions into a zip-lock bag or bowls with lids.

Protein bars – These are easy to eat in the car.  I like to buy ones that are a good source of fiber and protein to keep me full longer.  Brands I recommend: Kind Bars, Larabars and Lenny & Larry’s protein cookies.

Jerky – My favorite is the turkey or salmon jerky from Trader Joe’s.

Roasted chickpeas – You can buy these at the store or make them yourself!

Yogurt – My kids like yogurt sticks on the go so I buy Stoneyfield organic yogurt and throw a few in the cooler.

Applesause – My pantry is always stocked with a  big box of applesause pouches.  I like to buy them in bulk at Costco.

I try to grab snacks that I already have at home instead of having to buy foods on the road.  I feel like it saves me money and time by having these foods ready to go.

What are some of your favorite go-to travel foods?
