Outside Fun Activities

  • Sidewalk Paint w/ Water Fun!  Fill a bucket with water and grab a few brushes with different widths (Dollar Store). Kids love this!  Join in or take pictures delighting in their joy as they create masterpieces! Best part: The sun cleans up when they’re all done, so no extra work on you!
  • Neighborhood Walk Together.  Look for Interesting Items? A plastic bag with handles is all you need. Take a family walk. Ask your child to look for items they think are interesting: a twig, stone, leaf etc. Collect them in the bag. At home, delight in your child’s excitement sharing what was found.

Optional: If you have a piece of cardboard, you and your child could glue or tape their interesting objects on it to display.  Nature in your home!

Bedtime Snuggle Time With A Flashlight

Before tucking your child in bed at night, put a small flashlight in your pocket or behind the book you are going to read.  Say, “I have a surprise!” Turn lights off. Flashlight on!

Stress safety: Always point the light away from faces.  Protect eyes.

Another Flashlight Surprise Another Night

Prior to tucking your child in, cut out about 6 pictures like a ball, bike, foods your child loves, cars, monster trucks, etc. or, have pictures of your family.

Privately, tape pictures on the walls without your child knowing.

Turn lights off.  Flashlight on!

Put the light on one of your pictures. Enjoy conversation.  Your child could try to find pictures, too!

Inside Activities when Your Child Needs Connection

  • When you are squeezing in some work on your laptop, surprise your child and turn it off.  Say, “You are more important than my work.  Let’s dance together!”  Pick your favorite music! Or, if you are on your phone, say, “I’m going to turn my phone off. I want to play with someone I love in the deepest part of my heart. You!”
  • With your child, make a “pillow rug” on the floor.  You and your child try to find pillows in the house.

Sit or lie down on the pillow rug. Read or tell a story. Or make up a song to the tune of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” using your child’s name in the song.

I love _____ (child’s name) Yes, I do,

I love _______ (child’s name) Yes, I do.

(Child’s name) likes the books I read,

And I love his hugs with me,

“I love _____ yes, I do, I love _______ yes, I do.

Optional: Pillow fight!

Play “Puppy Feet”

Directions:  Show a “black clubs card.” Looks like puppy’s feet (clover shaped).

Take about 15 cards: some red, some black. In the 15 cards, make sure there are about puppy feet cards mixed in with the pile of 15 cards.

First, turn deck of 15 cards face down.  You turn top card over face up and create a new pile.  Continue turning over one card at a time until you see “puppy feet.”  Tell your child whoever sees “puppy feet” first, puts their hand on it as fast as you can and the winner keeps all the cards underneath.  Continue turning one card over until all cards are gone.

For the first few “puppy feet” cards turned over, pretend to be slow to touch it. “You beat me!”
